Counseling FAQ’s

What is professional counseling?

Professional counselors work with individuals, families, groups and organizations. Counseling is a collaborative effort between the counselor and client. Professional counselors help clients identify goals and potential solutions to problems which cause emotional turmoil; seek to improve communication and coping skills; strengthen self-esteem; and promote behavior change and optimal mental health. Through counseling you examine the behaviors, thoughts and feelings that are causing difficulties in your life. You learn effective ways to deal with your problems by building upon personal strengths. A professional counselor will encourage your personal growth and development in ways that foster your interest and welfare.

Will my visits be covered by insurance or other benefits?

Many of our clients use health insurance or church benefit packages. Since policies and benefits vary greatly, we can file your insurance after your first visit. Clients are responsible for payment; if insurance covers counseling the reimbursement payment will come directly to the client.  See more about our insurance and financial policy.

Generally we are able to accommodate your appointment request within 1 week. Emergencies will be given priority and generally are seen within 48 hours.

May I choose my own therapist?

Many of our therapist operate on a contract basis, so we can work with you to assist in identifying the individual therapist that would best serve your needs. Your preference will always be honored if your presenting issue is within their treatment area and they are accepting new clients.

How long does therapy take?

The length of treatment depends on many factors. More detail concerning this would be discussed after an intake and regular counseling session. However, at ACS we work hard to address your needs in a timely manner. We are often able to make marked progress with clients in 6-8 sessions.
